Kubernetes School

Chapter 7 · Kubernetes School

The Shared Lesson Plan

Every maths classroom should teach the same lesson.

One shared lesson plan

Same topic.

Same page numbers.

Same homework.

If each teacher wrote their own plan from memory,

the rooms would drift apart.

So the principal keeps one shared lesson plan.

It sits on a public notice board the whole school can read.

When a classroom opens, it looks at that board.

It does not hide the plan inside one room alone.

When the plan changes

If the principal updates the plan —

new page numbers, a new worksheet —

not every classroom changes at once.

Some classrooms copy the plan onto their whiteboard when they open,

and keep the old plan until the room reopens.

Other classrooms keep checking the board,

and catch the change after a little while.

So:

ConfigMap

is the

shared public notice board / lesson plan

Pod

is the

classroom that reads the board

cartoon school notice board labeled ConfigMap holding a shared maths lesson plan, with classroom pods reading the board — some copying it onto a whiteboard, others checking again later.
A ConfigMap is the school's shared lesson plan on a public notice board — classrooms (pods) read it from outside the room.

ConfigMap is the shared lesson plan

In Kubernetes, that shared lesson plan is called a ConfigMap.

A ConfigMap holds settings and notes an app needs,

in a place outside the classroom itself.

The classrooms (pods) stay replaceable.

The plan (ConfigMap) stays easy to share and update.

You do not rebuild every classroom

just to change the homework sheet.

What happens next

The notice board is public on purpose.

You would never pin the staffroom key on it.

For that, the school has a locked drawer.
