Kubernetes School

Chapter 6 · Kubernetes School

One Front Door

But what about visitors from town?

Visitors and one front door

Inside the school, the Maths sign (a Service) helps students find the right classroom.

But what about visitors from town?

They do not start inside the buildings.

They arrive from the street.

The school does not put every classroom on the roadside.

That would be noisy and confusing.

Instead, the school keeps one front door.

Addresses on a note

Visitors carry an address, like a note in their pocket:

school.town/maths

or

school.town/science

The front door reads the address.

If the note says /maths, send them toward the Maths sign (Service).

If the note says /science, send them toward the Science sign (Service).

The school name on the note (school.town) is the host.

The path after the slash (/maths) is which lesson they want.

From there, each Service sign points them to an open classroom.

So:

Ingress

is the

front door / host+path rules

Service

is the

lesson sign the door sends you to

cartoon school front door labeled Ingress reading visitor notes for school.town/maths and school.town/science, then sending visitors toward Service signs that point to classroom pods.
An Ingress is the school's one front door — it reads the host and path, then sends visitors to the right Service.

Ingress is the front door

In Kubernetes, that front door is called an Ingress.

An Ingress is a set of rules for how the outside world reaches the school.

It reads the host and the path,

then sends visitors to the right Service sign.

It does not replace the Service signs.

It uses them.

One door, clear paths

Outside, then the front door (Ingress), then the lesson sign (Service), then the classrooms (Pods).

One door.

Clear paths.

The whole town can visit without a map of every room.
