Kubernetes School

Chapter 5 · Kubernetes School

Finding the Right Classroom

Classrooms can move.

Finding the right classroom

Classrooms can move.

A maths classroom might open in Building 1 today,

and Building 2 tomorrow.

If students only remembered “that yellow room on the left,”

they would get lost.

So the school puts up a clear sign:

“Maths this way.”

The sign does not carry students.

It points them to the right door.

So:

Service

is the

steady sign / name

Pod

is

a classroom the sign can point to

cartoon blue octopus principal beside a Service sign saying Maths this way, pointing students toward several open classroom pods; classrooms can move, the sign stays.
The Service is the steady sign that points to the right classrooms.

One sign, many classrooms

Sometimes three maths classrooms are open at once.

The sign can send students to any of those open rooms.

One student goes to room A.

Another goes to room B.

The lessons stay balanced.

A Service gives a lesson a steady name

In Kubernetes, that helpful sign is called a Service.

A Service is a steady name for a kind of lesson.

It points students to the right classrooms —

even when those classrooms move or get replaced.

The sign stays

The classrooms (pods) can change.

The sign (Service) stays.

So when the principal opens a new maths classroom,

the sign still points to maths.

Students do not need a new map every time.

That is why apps keep working when pods restart.

You find the lesson by the Service,

not by chasing one classroom forever.
