Kubernetes School

Chapter 2 · Kubernetes School

Meet the Classrooms

A school is made of classrooms.

What is a classroom?

Each classroom is a place where a lesson happens.

In our computer story, each classroom is called a pod.

A pod is one running piece of an application.

Just like a classroom has a lesson happening inside it, a pod has a lesson running inside it too.

A classroom has one main lesson happening inside it.

In our computer story, that main lesson is called a container.

So:

the pod

is the

classroom

the container

is the

lesson running inside it

Most of the time, one classroom has one main lesson.

A cartoon blue octopus principal pointing at a maths classroom labelled POD. Inside, a teacher teaches 2 + 3 = 5 at the chalkboard — that lesson is labelled CONTAINER. A speech bubble says: One classroom. One main lesson.
One classroom. One main lesson.

Temporary pods

You usually do not walk into every classroom and manage it by yourself.

The principal watches the classrooms.

If a classroom suddenly closes, that lesson stops too.

Then the principal can open another classroom so the lesson can start again.

That is why pods feel temporary.

They can start.

They can stop.

They can be replaced.

What matters is not that one special classroom stays forever.

What matters is that the right lessons keep running.

Three maths classrooms were three pods

In chapter 1, we asked for three maths classrooms.

Those three classrooms were three pods.

Each one had a main lesson inside it.

When one classroom closed, Kubernetes opened another pod so three were open again.

What happens next

And our digital school is only getting started.

We will look at the school buildings that hold these classrooms.
